Communicating with People Living with Dementia

Communicating with people living with dementia requires more than just words — it calls for empathy, patience, and new ways of connecting. How we communicate shapes their world — and every word, pause, and gesture leaves a lasting mark.

In this engaging 90-minute online session, you’ll explore how cognitive changes affect communication, and learn practical verbal and nonverbal techniques to foster trust, reduce frustration, and support dignity in everyday interactions.

Whether you’re a healthcare professional, caregiver, recreation specialist, or family member, you’ll leave with tools to make communication more intentional, respectful, and meaningful — even when words are limited.

This session is ideal for those new to caring for people living with dementia care and  those looking to renew their approach with strategies that strengthen relationships and create more positive moments, every single day.

Key Insight: The Importance of Positive Interactions

Every interaction with a person living with dementia is an opportunity to build trust, reduce anxiety, and create moments of joy. Positive communication helps preserve dignity, fosters emotional security, and strengthens the connection between caregiver and individual.

Even when memory fades, the emotional impact of a warm smile, a kind word, or a patient response remains strong. By focusing on positive, respectful interactions, caregivers and families can help create a supportive environment where individuals feel valued, understood, and safe — every single day.

Communication with people living with dementia isn’t about having all the answers — it’s about creating moments of connection, even through uncertainty.

Even when words are few or questions remain, every interaction has meaning.

In dementia care, unspoken moments — a shared glance, a smile, a touch — can speak volumes and build trust.
