Making Daily Care Work: Practical Montessori Strategies for Dementia Care

You’re on the frontline… you’re with the person most often.

You see the pacing, the repetitive questions, the resistance, the restlessness, the moments when something small can quickly become hard for everyone.

And you’re already working hard.

But in dementia care, effort alone is not always enough.

Many days feel reactive because the day has not been set up in a way that supports the person well enough.

That is where this training comes in.

Grounded in the Montessori method as adapted for dementia care by the Center for Applied Research in Dementia (CARD), this practical one-day workshop helps frontline staff understand how to make daily care more organized, more respectful, and more effective.

This is not about adding more activities.

It is about learning how to prepare the environment, the interaction, and the moment so the person has a better chance of success.

This training focuses on what frontline staff can actually control in real life:
the setup, the language, the approach, the pacing, the cues, and the opportunities for the person to succeed.

Making Daily Care Work: Practical Montessori Strategies for Dementia Care

A hands-on, action-focused training that equips frontline staff with practical Montessori strategies to improve daily care, reduce distress, and change the conditions that often lead to resistance, struggle, and many difficult moments before they escalate.

The Real Problem

You don’t need more theory.

You need to know:

  • What to say when a resident resists care
  • What to do when someone is anxious, upset, or repeatedly calling out
  • How to get through care tasks without it becoming a struggle

And just as importantly…

When to pause—at the very first clue that resistance is coming—so you can step back, reset, and shift what happens next.

Because most days, the challenge isn’t understanding dementia…

👉 It’s getting through the next interaction successfully.

What This Training Actually Does

This workshop focuses on daily care execution—what staff can do, say, and adjust in real time.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Reduce resistance during care without force or frustration
  • Use simple communication shifts that change outcomes immediately
  • Offer meaningful choices that increase cooperation
  • Recognize what’s really driving behaviors—and respond effectively
  • Turn difficult moments into calmer, more successful interactions

What Makes This Different

Most training explains dementia, and that’s important. But, this training shows staff how to work within it.

👉 Not “why this happens”
👉 But “what do I do right now?”

What Changes After This Training

  • Less pushback during care
  • Fewer escalations
  • More cooperation
  • More confidence from staff
  • A noticeable shift in daily interactions

This is NOT for you if:

  • You are looking for a deep dive into theory, systems, or culture change
  • You want to redesign programs, committees, or environments
  • Your focus is leadership strategy rather than frontline care

👉 This training is built for doing the work—not redesigning the system

Best Fit

  • PSWs / HCAs
  • Frontline care staff
  • Teams needing immediate, practical improvement

Not sure which workshop best suits your needs?

If your goal is:

  • “We need staff to handle care better tomorrow” → 1-Day Workshop
  • “We need to change how our home operates overall” → 2-Day Workshop

Rooted in the Original Montessori Approach to Dementia Care

In 1995, Dr. Cameron J. Camp, PhD, adapted Dr. Maria Montessori’s educational method to meet the needs of older adults living with cognitive impairment.

That work became the foundation of The Original Montessori Dementia Training®, now recognized internationally.

At the heart of this approach is one important idea:

Montessori does not focus on controlling behaviour. It focuses on changing the conditions around the person.

When care is better prepared, daily life often becomes calmer, clearer, and more meaningful.
