Practical Montessori Strategies for Dementia Care

Five-Hour Online Training for PSWs, HCAs, Care Aides and Frontline Care Staff

You are on the frontline and you spend more time with the person than almost anyone else.

You see the pacing, repeated questions, restlessness, care refusal and moments when something small can quickly become difficult for everyone.

And you’re already working hard.

But in dementia care, effort alone is not always enough.

Many difficult moments happen because the environment, interaction or care approach has not been set up in a way that supports the person’s remaining abilities.

That is where this training comes in.

Grounded in the Montessori method as adapted for dementia care by the Center for Applied Research in Dementia, this practical five-hour online program helps frontline care staff make daily care more organized, respectful and effective.

This is not about adding more activities or giving staff more work.

It is about preparing the environment, the interaction and the moment so the person has a better chance of understanding, participating and succeeding.

Practical Training for Real Care Situations

This training focuses on what frontline staff can influence every day:

  • setup
  • language
  • approach
  • pacing
  • cues
  • choices offered; and
  • opportunities for the person to participate.

Participants learn practical Montessori strategies that can be used during personal care, meals, transitions, conversations and other everyday interactions.

The goal is to reduce distress, support participation and change the conditions that often lead to resistance and struggle—before the situation escalates.

The Real Challenge

Frontline caregivers do not need more theory alone.

They need to know:

  • What can I say when a resident resists care?
  • What can I change when someone becomes anxious or upset?
  • How can I make a care task easier to understand?
  • How can I support participation without taking over?
  • What should I do when the same approach is not working?
  • When should I pause, step back and try again differently?

Because on most days, the immediate challenge is not simply understanding dementia.

It is getting through the next interaction successfully.

What This Training Teaches

Participants will learn how to:

  • recognize preserved abilities and build on what the person can still do
  • use the first moments of an approach to reduce uncertainty and distress
  • communicate with fewer words and clearer cues
  • break care tasks into manageable steps
  • offer simple, supported choices
  • help without taking over
  • recognize behaviour as communication
  • explore what may be making a situation difficult
  • respond more effectively when a person refuses care
  • adjust the environment, timing or approach
  • describe care situations clearly and objectively; and
  • share useful information with the next caregiver.

What Makes This Training Different

Many dementia education programs explain why changes occur.

That understanding is important.

But frontline staff also need practical answers to the question:

What can I do differently right now?

Making Daily Care Work connects dementia knowledge with everyday care execution.

It shows staff how small changes in language, timing, setup and support can create a very different experience for both the resident and the caregiver.

What Staff Can Take Back to Work

After completing the training, participants will have practical approaches to support:

  • calmer care interactions
  • less pushback and struggle
  • clearer communication
  • greater resident participation
  • more appropriate use of choice
  • earlier recognition of distress
  • more flexible responses to care refusal
  • stronger documentation and
  • greater confidence during everyday dementia care.

Montessori Dementia Training Designed for Frontline Care Staff

This online training is a strong fit for:

  • Personal Support Workers
  • Health Care Aides
  • Other direct-care and frontline caregivers and
  • Care teams seeking practical, immediately usable approaches.

It is designed for people who provide direct care and want strategies they can begin applying during their next shift.

This Training May Not Be the Right Fit If…

This program is not intended as an in-depth exploration of:

  • organizational culture change
  • leadership strategy
  • program or committee development
  • large-scale environmental redesign
  • implementation across an entire care organization or advanced Montessori credentialing.

This training is built for staff who are doing the daily work of care—

not for redesigning the entire system.

Five Hours of Focused Online Learning

The program is instructor led and combines practical teaching with:

  • realistic care examples
  • guided reflection
  • exercises
  • practical takeaway tools
  • a certificate of completion.

Rooted in the Original Montessori Approach to Dementia Care

In 1995, Dr. Cameron J. Camp adapted Dr. Maria Montessori’s educational method to meet the needs of older adults living with cognitive impairment.

That work became the foundation of the Original Montessori Dementia Training®, now recognized internationally.

At the heart of the approach is one important idea:

Montessori does not focus on controlling behaviour. It focuses on changing the conditions around the person.

When the environment is clearer, the approach is calmer and the person is given the right level of support, daily life can become more successful, respectful and meaningful.

A Better Way to Do What You Already Do

This training is not about giving frontline staff more tasks.

It is about giving them a better way to approach the work they already do every day.

Small changes can make a significant difference:

  • pause before entering the person’s space
  • use fewer words
  • show rather than only tell
  • offer one manageable step
  • support the ability that remains
  • notice the first signs of distress and
  • change the approach before the moment becomes a struggle.
