Convenient for your schedule—without compromising care.

Because the goal isn’t just to make training easier. It’s to make better care more consistent.

Overview

Most dementia training focuses on what to do in the moment.

This program goes further.

It focuses on shaping the conditions that create those moments—and building a care approach that is consistent, sustainable, and embedded across the team.

Using The Montessori Approach to Dementia Care, participants learn how to:

  • Increase meaningful engagement across the day
  • Reduce responsive behaviors by changing conditions
  • Strengthen non-pharmacological care practices at a systems level
  • Create environments that support success—not struggle

This is not about adding more tasks.

It’s about reframing how care is delivered—and experienced—across the organization.

What Makes This Different

This is not a passive online course.

Each module is designed to guide participants through:

  • Instructor-led video training
  • Real-world examples from long-term care and community settings
  • Built-in pause points for reflection and application
  • Practical strategies that translate into daily practice

The focus is not just on understanding concepts—

but on applying them consistently across teams, environments, and routines.

Program Structure

The program is delivered in a series of modules, each building on the last.

Together, they form a complete system for implementing The Montessori Approach to Dementia Care, including:

  • Rethinking dementia care and shifting the lens
  • Understanding behavior as communication
  • Shaping interactions through approach, timing, and communication
  • Changing communication – what to say and how to say it
  • Supporting autonomy through micro-choices
  • Designing environments that reduce confusion and distress
  • Creating meaningful roles and engagement
  • Responding effectively when distress still occurs

Complete Program Access

Modules can be taken individually.

When completed as a full series, participants will have experienced the complete training equivalent of the Montessori Dementia Training Transformative In-Person Workshop—2 days in person/10.5 hours online – with the added benefit of revisiting content as needed.

What Participants Receive

  • Instructor-led video modules
  • Downloadable presentation slides
  • Printable worksheets and tools
  • Guided exercises with practical application
  • A structured learning path aligned with the full workshop
  • Final Training Knowledge Recap with answer key
  • Unlimited email support from an Instructor for 3 months after completion

Who This Is For

  • Interdisciplinary care teams
  • Supervisors and managers
  • Clinical leaders
  • Recreation and life enrichment professionals
  • Organizations working toward culture change in dementia care

Outcomes

Participants and teams gain the ability to:

  • Recognize and influence the conditions that shape behaviour
  • Create more consistent, supportive care experiences
  • Reduce distress across daily routines—not just in isolated moments
  • Increase engagement, participation, and sense of purpose
  • Build a shared approach that can be sustained over time

Why This Matters

In dementia care, outcomes are rarely driven by a single interaction.

They are shaped by patterns—of environment, approach, and expectation.

When those patterns change, what becomes possible changes too.

Module 1 — Rethinking Dementia Care

Shift the lens

  • Why behaviors are not the problem
  • Conditions vs reactions
  • Introduction to Montessori Inspired Lifestyle®
  • The “why” behind everything that follows

Module 2 — Understanding Behavior as Communication

Decode what’s really happening

  • Responsive behaviors as signals
  • Early signs of distress (before escalation)
  • The “Ask / Why / Try” mindset
  • Common misinterpretations

Module 3 — The First 5 Seconds

Where outcomes begin

  • How interactions actually start
  • Tone, pace, positioning
  • Entering the space
  • What changes outcomes before words are spoken

Module 4 — Communication That Works

What to say—and how to say it

  • Simplifying without infantilizing
  • Tone, rhythm, and timing
  • Giving instructions vs offering guidance
  • Avoiding escalation through language

Module 5 — Reducing Resistance Through Micro-Choices

Give control back safely

  • Why resistance happens
  • The size and timing of demands
  • Micro-choices in daily care
  • Practical examples (bathing, dressing, meals)

Module 6 — Environment Shapes Behavior

Fix the setting, not the person

  • Physical environment (layout, cues, signage)
  • Social environment (staff behavior, pacing)
  • Reducing confusion and overwhelm
  • How environment prevents behaviors

Module 7 — Meaningful Engagement & Roles

Replace “activities” with purpose

  • Why activities often fail
  • Roles vs tasks
  • Creating contribution and identity
  • Real-world role examples

Module 8 — When it Still Happens

What to do when it happens

  • De-escalation strategies
  • The pause
  • What to do after resistance starts
  • Practical, real-life scenarios

Participants learn through realistic, scenario-based examples and guided exercises, including:

    • Swan Manor LTC – Encouraging residents to ‘be at home’
    • Hawthorne Landing Retirement Residence – How we can easily tweak an environment for success
    • Ms. Romano, the “Midnight Meal Maker” – Turning an obstacle into an opportunity

Fictional scenarios based on real-world dementia care situations.
