In this inspiring session, Prof. Maureen Harris introduces Montessori Mozarts – Music & Movement, a research-based, flexible program designed to enrich the lives of individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.

Grounded in Montessori-inspired practices, this approach supports cognitive, social, and physical well-being through meaningful, everyday musical experiences. Whether in group or one-on-one settings, Maureen will demonstrate how caregivers can confidently use music to:

Connect with emotions, memories, and identity

Calm anxious minds and reduce agitation; surprising ways music can transform our bodies

Encourage movement, dance, and joyful interaction

Build bridges between individuals and caregivers

Through real-life examples and practical strategies, Maureen empowers caregivers to become more musically confident and shares valuable strategies and resources to meaningfully bridge connections to reawaken the spirit through sound, rhythm, and connection.

Music and Montessori: A Natural Partnership

While music therapy isn’t part of the traditional Montessori method, it fits beautifully alongside Montessori-based dementia care.

Shared Goals, Complementary Strengths

Both approaches focus on supporting the whole person through meaningful, purposeful engagement—emotionally, socially, and cognitively.

How Music Enhances Montessori Care

Music helps calm anxious minds, encourages gentle movement, and builds emotional connections. It reinforces many Montessori strategies used to reduce distress and increase joy in daily routines.

A Stronger Approach, Together

Used alongside Montessori practices, music becomes a flexible, powerful tool to enhance quality of life for people living with dementia.
