Bringing Joy to Memory Care Residents Through Music

In the heart of Rancho Santa Fe, California, a heartwarming initiative is making waves in memory care communities. The Frostys, an intergenerational volunteer group, are dedicated to bringing joy to memory care residents through music and fun.

Comprising children in grades 3 through 8, these young volunteers participate in Sing-A-Longs at local memory care homes, fostering connections that transcend generations.

A Legacy of Love and Music

The inspiration behind The Frostys stems from “Grandma Joyce,” a musician and philanthropist who, even after her Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2018, continued to share her musical talents with fellow residents in her memory care community. Her daughter, Wendy, and granddaughters, Sophia and Charlotte, witnessed the profound impact of music on Joyce and others, leading them to establish The Frostys in her honor.

The Power of Familiar Melodies

Music has a unique ability to tap into memories and emotions, especially for individuals with dementia. Their song catalog includes classics from the 1940s and 1950s. Some of the titles are “You’re A Grand Old Flag,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” These familiar tunes often evoke smiles, singing, and even dancing among residents, creating moments of connection and joy. Benefits Beyond the Music

The impact of The Frostys extends beyond the immediate joy of the Sing-A-Longs. For the young volunteers, participating in these events fosters empathy, understanding, and a sense of community service. For the seniors, the interactions provide social engagement, mental stimulation, and a reminder that they are valued members of the community.
